ナポレオン・コンプレックスとは、背の低い人には劣等感があり、攻撃的であるという俗説です。これは、ナポレオン自身、目立って背が低く、コンプレックスをもっていたため、その反動として、それを克服するために激しい征服欲を燃やして、あの様な大事業をやってのけたとされることからきています。

例えば、背が低いというコンプレックスから体を鍛える男性が大勢いますが、このような行動もナポレオン・コンプレックスのひとつとして挙げられます。

が、近年の研究で、このナポレオン・コンプレックスはどうも疑わしいということが分かってきました。そもそもナポレオンの身長は当時としては平均で決して低くなく、また2007年に行なわれた米国セントラル・ランカシャー大学での実験では、むしろ背の高い人の方が短気（攻撃的）であるという結果が出ています。

The Napoleon complex is named after French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. The conventional wisdom is that Napoleon overcompensated for his short height by seeking power, war and conquest. However, Napoleon was actually average height for his time period. The perception that Napoleon was short may be related to his often being seen with his Imperial Guard, who were above average height.

In 2007, research by the University of Central Lancashire suggested that the Napoleon complex (described in terms of the theory that shorter men are more aggressive to dominate those who are taller than them) may be a myth. The study discovered that short men (below 5 foot 5 inches) were less likely to lose their temper than men of average height.
